11/9/09 12:53 am - [info]release07 posting in [info]aprende_espanol - Preguntas sobre gramática

What I was trying to say was "I was alone until a man walked out of a bar..." Why did he break the sentence up with "y": Yo estaba sola y hasta..

Eso es todo! Gracias :)

A friend of mine wants to design a computerized course of English for beginners, and he needs the actual course (text, questions, exercises etc.) that he will put into the software. Do you know anyone who holds a copyright to such a course and would be willing to enter into a strategic partnership to produce and sell the learning software? Or maybe you would like to write such a course yourself. Any other advice and ideas are welcome.

11/9/09 06:15 am - [info]leopold_paula_b posting in [info]linguaphiles - German word for "timing"

I know that we use the word "Timing" anyhow (and I'm fine with that), but is there a German word for it as well? I'm thinking of "comic timing" and generally of the timing in a performance, e.g. acrobatic feats, dancing, other sports or in a fight. (In dealing blows "Distanz und Timing" are crucial.)

So far I've got: Zeitgefühl; (der richtige) Zeitpunkt / Augenblick / Moment; Zeitwahl; zeitliche Abstimmung / Koordinierung; Zeiteinteilung; Takt; Tempo; Rhythmus; "Kairos".

None of them really convinces me. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

11/8/09 11:43 pm - [info]kittrel posting in [info]ratties - New, and Question regarding biting

My boyfriend and I are recent rat adoptees, we got our first ratties in May and have enjoyed them immensely since then! I can't believe I didn't figure out what great pets they were earlier, I feel like I've wasted so much time being ratless.

Our little crew consists of Silvia and Dahlia, who are sisters I got at the pet store when they were young. The other rat is Clio, who is a rescue with a pretty sad history of being a lab rat at a college and then tossed outdoors when the class was done (just awful... a bunch of them were 'released' and Clio was the only survivor, the others I assume were eaten by owls and hawks). As you can probably guess Silvie and Dahlie are little sweethearts and Clio is a bit... traumatized?

When I put my fingers in the cage the sisters will run to greet and lick my hands. Clio usually hangs back some, then when she gets close to investigate she will suddenly CHOMP on your finger, sometimes drawing blood. I heard this can be caused by people feeding them through the bars so they think anything that comes in is food.... this may be the case as when you put your whole hand in she doesn't seem interested in biting (unless you go too close to the nestbox, which is definitely a territorial thing and I respect that).

Is there a way to un-train them to immediately bite anything poked through the bars? I love it when Silvie and Dahlie lick my fingers and I hate having to always watch out for Clio and 'run' from her. I also feel like Clio is getting a 'bad rat' rap which isn't really her fault.

Silvia and Dahlia's attitudes really do help Clio feel more confident and outgoing since we matched them up. I wish they could teach her some cage manners too, but I guess it's up to us. Ideas, experiences?

My life is in the middle of a crazy change, so I decided now would be the time to create an extensive "To Read" list.
I am coping with mental illness and was curious to know are there any wounderful memoirs, fiction, novels, etc that do the subject of mental illness justice?
Help me add to my reading list.
Thanks.

11/8/09 03:57 pm - [info]jawastew posting in [info]bookish - Peter & Max: A Fables Novel by Bill Willingham

You don’t need to be a fan of Bill Willingham’s Fables comics to like this book--you don’t even have to know what they are to understand Peter & Max. This is a re-telling of the Pied Piper of Hamelin story from a different perspective, one of those “what really happened” kind of tales. For every other character or event that might confuse the reader, Willingham explains the course of the comics in a few words and lines that, if anything, spoil crucial points of suspense that have navigated and pushed Fables over the years. But don’t let that discourage you at all if you’re a new fan. What I like the most about the comics and this book, is Willingham’s grasp of consequence and reality. To validate these fairy tales with contemporary ideas, Willingham is always examining the life of our favorite heroes and heroines in the unwritten pages after their most famous moments. Away from the storybook and our imaginations is a far removed perspective that pulls gently in our direction--here is more, it says to us; the story continues; life goes on.

For the folks in fairy tales--Fables, they call themselves--reality is about as pragmatic and mundane for them as it is for us. Forced to flee their fairy tale homes and find refuge in an enchanted portion of New York City’s Upper West Side, the Fables remind us that we know of only a tiny period in their lives; in our world they must learn to coexist in very human ways, without magic or magical objects that would draw attention to themselves. Yanked out of context of course it’s easy to imagine all sorts of wonderful, magical settings that make romantic adventures out of very real, scary episodes. Despite still writing in “happily ever after” endings, Willingham’s come a long way to revolutionize what’s been handed down to us for so long and in the same form.

Peter & Max is about the Piper family (a band of traveling minstrels), two brothers (Peter and Max), and the innocent Peep family who gets caught in the middle of fraternal jealousy and revenge. Like all such things, a combination of skewed perspective and hurt feelings tips the scales of envy towards violence. What begins as an ominous and mysterious set of flashbacks and present-day events, the story gradually finds promise in its most haunting thread: who is the true Pied Piper? Peter or Max? Peter is a sweet boy, always managing to do what’s right and do it well; Max is his older, but less talented, brother who snaps at the slightest attempt to undermine his authority and right as the eldest Piper child. It’s almost impossible to imagine the sweet-tempered Peter luring unsuspecting children out of their beds and away from their homes, but too predictable to assume the blame lays somewhere outside, somewhere obvious.

What does this sentence mean? 快调足球赛的台。Is it "Quickly change it to the soccer match channel" or "Quickly change it from the soccer match channel"? I made it up to practice the words 调,足球,and 赛, but I'm not quite sure what it means ;)

11/8/09 11:38 pm - [info]amles80 posting in [info]linguaphiles - Help me chose a word, please!

EDIT: Thank you all! The dictionary doesn't always (but sometimes!) tell if a word is American or British English but I've got the answer now! :)

Which word is best - cellphone cell phone or mobile phone?

Context: X-files fanfiction; Mulder gets a phonecall when he is arguing with Scully:

"The sound of Mulder’s [---] put an end to their argument."

This is silly, I know...... but as I am writing this thing, I should probably pay attention to the details. I just can't remember right now (as if I haven't watched so much TV in my life!) which alternative is used more. Maybe it doesn't matter at all?

11/8/09 04:56 pm - [info]riceboyart - 3 Pages: Book 2 is OVER!

So, Chapter 10 and Book 2 of OoT both end with this update; this comic is in theory two-thirds done, now. Goodness goodness goodness.

The handsome Rice Boy Wiki went up recently! A couple of folks have already laid down an infrastructure and started putting a bunch of information there. I think I'll replace the World page with a link straight to this wiki. The goal is to have a focal point for world-internal information that I don't have to spend a lot of time maintaining myself. So if this is an interesting thing, feel free to have a look and modify stuff.

Right now I'm reading Dune by Frank Herbert for the first time (for a lovely reading group), and LOVING IT. I tried it a couple of times years ago, but never got through the dense bits near the start. It is a very visual book, I think, so I've drawn two illustrations and hope to do more from later in the book. OK! Will talk to you on Wednesday!

One of my New Year's resolutions/goals is to read 100 books in a year, and I'm on number 78. It's going to be really hard for me to read much in November because of NaNoWriMo, and I was wondering if I should read short easy books, or nice long books. I feel bad counting a hundred page book as one of my books, but it still counts, right? I don't know... I was just wondering what you would do I guess.

11/8/09 01:37 pm - [info]xdragonladyx posting in [info]novice_knitters - To Frog or Not to Frog, That is the Question

Strange question, but since I've never felted I thought I'd ask. My mother-in-law bought two sweaters in Ireland that are wool. She wasn't thinking about it and washed them in hot water, might even have dried them. Since she couldn't wear them anymore she gave them to me.

How hopeless would it be to frog a sweater that's been lightly felted? One of them still has the yarn visible as yarn, it's just really fuzzy yarn. Would the yarn itself be so damaged or changed by the heat that it would be pointless to use even after I unraveled it? I'm a little afraid of the answer, but give it to me anyway.

The other one I don't think can be unraveled, it's a little too far gone I think. I'm thinking of felting that one all the way and cutting it up into panels to make a bag or something. I don't have a clue what to do with it other then that.

11/8/09 12:20 pm - [info]merrigoround posting in [info]ratties - Uh...crap??

A few weeks ago I finally introduced my new rat Sally to my rat Isabelle, after I had Sally kept aside for a bit to check for illnesses and such. Today when I went to clean their cage I lifted Sally up to find something I didn't notice before...testicles. A fairly small set of testicles, considering that those torpedoes are pretty hard to miss, and now I'm afraid Isabelle is pregnant. I'm really unsure of what to do. I'd love to keep the litter, but I think two or three adult rats is as much as I can afford to care for, and also as much as I can keep comfortably in my cage. Suggestions? Signs of pregnancy? Anything?
